WCC COMMUNITY LETTER REGARDING THE REVERSAL OF ROE V. WADE
May 3, 2022
Dear WCC Community,
We are sending deep care and warmth to all as this quarter moves along with the news that on the horizon another Supreme Court decision will impact our human rights and civil liberties by overturning Roe v Wade. While this feels somewhat incomprehensible, it is very real and with very direct impacts on, once again, the most disenfranchised among us who will experience the most pain, suffering, trauma, and in some cases, deaths.
We know that you may be experiencing a wide range of emotions and reactions - and want to validate that all reactions are warranted and it’s ok to express them. We are grateful to all of the students and community members who are working on making their voices heard, finding ways to engage, and trying to take care during this difficult time.
In times like this, community and solidarity are critical. We find ourselves considering the spaces where we can affect change. Every one of us has a personal sphere of influence, and in the darkest moments it is often the will of the people engaging in creating community-based solutions that creates a path forward when seemingly there are very few alternatives to be found.
While we cannot safely open the indoor space just yet, please join us on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 10am in front of the WCC for coffee, treats, and community care.
We hope that you allow yourself space to grieve, to feel, to pause, to inhale and exhale, to do whatever it is that you need to do to get in touch with yourself. To ground yourself. The thing about systemic oppression in action is that its effects can be demoralizing to the point of being debilitating. We have to allow ourselves the space we need to remain human. To remain intact. And from that space we can act. Trust that you are not alone. Trust that you are not carrying this weight by yourself; that you are one link in a chain - and that together we can make an impact.
We hope that you are able to identify and lean on community in this time. Know that we are with you as news continues to unfold. From moment to moment we have felt outraged, scared, sad, ignited, and so much more; the cycle of emotions has repeated itself to varying degrees. Whatever you may be feeling is okay. This is a fiercely challenging and heartbreaking moment. And, this does not have to be where the story ends.
In community,
The WCC
